Accessibility
We want Moss to be easy and calm for everyone, including people who use a screen reader, larger text, or less motion.
What Moss does
- Screen readers. Moss is built to work with VoiceOver on iPhone and TalkBack on Android. Moss's moods, the faces and the focus ring have spoken descriptions.
- Larger text. Moss follows your phone's text size, up to 200 %.
- Less motion. If you turn on Reduce motion (iPhone) or Remove animations (Android), Moss stops moving things around but still shows you when something changes.
- No gesture only. Everything you can do with a swipe can also be done with a tap, and as a screen-reader action.
- Colour. Colour never carries meaning alone: each face has its word. There's no red anywhere.
- Sound. Moss reads its lines aloud and highlights the words as they're spoken. You can turn the voice off in You. → Moss reads aloud, or with the speaker on the first screens. Moss's recorded lines play even when your phone is on silent, so turn the voice off if you'd rather it stayed quiet.
- Saying instead of typing. Where your phone supports it, you can speak instead of typing.
- Haptics are small, and follow your phone's settings.
Standard
We aim for WCAG 2.1 level AA (EN 301 549 for mobile apps), in the app and on this website.
Known gaps
We haven't finished a full test against WCAG 2.1 AA yet. What we know today:
- Moss uses its light colours only, by design, even when your phone is set to dark mode.
- Larger text has been checked on the first minutes, the mood journal and capturing things, but not yet on every screen. Some lines wrap onto two lines at the largest sizes.
- Screen-reader and contrast checks haven't been completed on every screen.
- The Nook and Grove scenes are pictures. They're described for screen readers in a sentence, and some details aren't described.
